Frequently Asked Questions

What is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR)?

Youth participatory action research offers a process for centering youth voice, while exploring and taking action on issues that impact their lives. Youth participants are in the role of co-researchers, driving the content of the study and its final group presentation.

How can I get involved in "Herstories": A YPAR Study?

You need to be a student who identifies as a girl and be between the ages of 16 and 19. You must be currently attending high school in Chilliwack. Although you can withdraw at any time, you should be prepared to attend the series of workshop sessions (5) and final presentation. If you are under 18, we have to obtain Written Consent by your legal guardian for you to participate. If you are 18 or over, you will provide your own consent.

If I participate, how will I benefit?

You should benefit by learning more about gender discrimination, while contributing your stories about your sexist experiences.

Your knowledge, communication, and advocacy skills should be increased. By sharing with others, you can empower awareness about the issue of sexism and lead action toward creating change within public high schools.

You will also receive a $50 gift card for participating in the study. There will be food and drink at every session, as well as a celebratory meal at the end of the research.

Participating in the 'Herstories': Empowering High School Girls Through Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) can be a transformative experience. Sharing your own story can create opportunities for all girls to increase their success and wellbeing.

The University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board is in this process of approving this research study.
